Take a look at yourself. Look closely. Observe how you treat tea and your finest tea utensils. What can you tell about yourself, about your own character, if you compare how you treat tea to other things in your life?
That is one reason to train ourselves in the art of tea, to cultivate ourselves, to strive to improve ourselves, not only in the skill of making tea but in living life. Tea art is not about brewing “good tea”. Tea is like a mirror or magnifying glass into our own selves. By first seeing what is there we can start to improve.
Gentle, can I learn to be more gentle, less selfish, and patient, and grateful, and generous and may I learn to be more attentive with the next cup I brew and serve my guest? I need to practice again, again, and again, and purify the stains.
